Can I remove villa's black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in the Jumeirah villa has felt really damp for the last couple of weeks, and I just pulled the wardrobe away from the wall to find a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate behind it. I’m worried the dewa AC is causing condensation. Is this something I can tackle with vinegar and a scrub brush from Day to Day, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

In your Dubai villa, the combination of high humidity and constant AC use creates a perfect environment for condensation and mold growth behind furniture. For a patch the size of a dinner plate, a DIY approach is possible but carries risks if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.

You can attempt to clean non-porous surfaces like painted walls with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, vinegar is often ineffective on certain black molds common here. The critical first step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In many Jumeirah villas, this is indeed condensation from an AC unit set too cold for the room's humidity level, causing the cold wall behind the wardrobe to sweat.

If the mold has penetrated the gypsum board or is on the back of the wardrobe itself, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Remediation involves more than surface cleaning; it requires containing the area to prevent spore dispersal and using HEPA filtration. For a confirmed issue of this size, a professional inspection can identify the exact species and moisture source, ensuring it doesn't return quickly. The Dubai climate means this problem will likely recur unless the root cause is professionally addressed.
