Can I remove window mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom’s small window has black mold growing all around the edges, and it's definitely gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray, but it came back in a few days. I'm worried it's spreading behind the tiles. Is this something I can fix myself with a stronger cleaner, or should I just call a professional?

Small window mold is extremely common in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The mold you see is a surface symptom of a moisture problem, and bleach only removes the surface stain without addressing the root cause or the spores.

For a small, recurring patch, you can attempt a more thorough DIY approach. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner designed for porous surfaces, not just bleach. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, then wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol to help dry it out. The critical step is to drastically reduce moisture; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the window open when possible to improve airflow. A dehumidifier can also help.

However, if the mold returns quickly after a proper cleaning or you are concerned it has spread behind tiles, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. This indicates a persistent moisture issue within the wall cavity that you cannot address superficially. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the problem behind the surfaces without unnecessary demolition. In many cases, what appears on the window frame is also present in the wall, requiring targeted remediation to prevent it from affecting indoor air quality and the building's structure. The cost of an assessment is typically justified by accurately diagnosing the problem and preventing more extensive, costly repairs later.
