Can I safely clean AC mold with a toddler present?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black spots spreading out from the corner. My husband thinks we can just spray it with bleach, but I’m worried about our toddler who’s been sleeping in there and has a runny nose that won’t go away. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves with products from ACE, or do we absolutely need to call a professional cleaning company?

No, you should not attempt to clean this with a toddler present. The primary risk is from inhaling disturbed spores, which can significantly worsen respiratory issues like your child's persistent runny nose.
Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like carpet; it only removes surface colour, leaving the mould's root structure intact to regrow. The damp carpet pad underneath is likely a much larger reservoir of growth. Given the UAE's high humidity and constant AC use, this creates a perfect environment for mould to thrive and spread quickly through spores. For a confirmed leak and visible growth with a child experiencing symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source, assess the extent of contamination within the AC unit and inside the wall/ceiling void, and safely contain the area during remediation to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. The goal is to verify the environment is measurably safer for your family. |
