Can I safely clean bedroom mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses for the past couple of weeks. I finally pulled our bed away from the wall in our master bedroom and found a patch of black mold in the corner where the outside wall is, it’s about the size of a dinner plate. I’m really worried about our health, especially my son's. Is this something I can clean safely with vinegar or bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

A dinner plate-sized patch on an external wall is significant, especially with symptoms present. In Dubai's climate, this is a classic sign of condensation from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the humid exterior, creating a perpetual moisture source.
For a patch that size with health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible mold is often just the surface growth; the underlying moisture issue and potential spread inside the wall cavity need proper assessment to prevent rapid recurrence. DIY cleaning with vinegar or bleach only addresses the surface stain, not the root cause, and can aerosolize spores if not contained. If you choose to clean it as an interim step, safety is paramount. Isolate the area by sealing the room, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub with a detergent solution, not bleach, and ensure the area is thoroughly dried. However, this is a temporary measure. The priority is identifying and rectifying the moisture source, which is often a complex interplay of insulation, AC temperature settings, and ventilation. A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to check the wall's saturation level and may recommend an air test to identify spore types and concentrations, which is crucial with a toddler's health involved. This diagnostic approach is the only way to ensure the problem is fully resolved. |
