Can I safely clean black mold myself for my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the blackish-green patch I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. I’m worried about their health but also don’t want to call in a professional team if it’s something I can safely clean myself with bleach or vinegar.
Is this a DIY job or should I get a specialist to handle it?

It depends entirely on the size of the patch and the underlying cause. For a small, isolated patch (under one square foot) that appeared due to a single condensation event, a DIY approach may be sufficient. However, if the growth is extensive, has been there a long time, or is related to a hidden leak, professional assessment is strongly advised, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms.
In Dubai's climate, that patch behind the wardrobe is a classic symptom of high humidity and condensation, where stagnant air meets a cold exterior wall. Simply wiping the surface is a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed; the mold will almost certainly return. Bleach is not recommended on porous surfaces like drywall or wood, as it only bleaches the surface colour and does not kill the roots, while also adding moisture. A vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution is more effective for a small DIY clean. Given that your children are coughing, the safest course is to identify the mold type. "Black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins, but many darker molds are less harmful. The only way to know is through lab analysis of a tape lift or swab sample. A proper inspection will also use a moisture meter to find the exact source of water enabling the growth, which is critical for a permanent solution. For health concerns and to ensure the problem is resolved at its root, a professional assessment is the most reliable path. |
