Can I safely clean black mold myself on a budget?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bedroom that we rarely use has developed a few large black splotches of mold on the wall behind the wardrobe, I think it must be from the humidity. We only noticed it yesterday while getting the room ready for visitors. I'm worried about it spreading but also on a tight budget. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

It depends on the mold's size and the wall's condition. For a small, isolated patch (under one square meter) on a non-porous surface, a DIY approach can be effective if you address the moisture source first.

First, identify and fix the humidity issue. In Dubai, this is almost always caused by condensation from an AC unit. Check that the guest room's AC is running regularly and set to a sufficiently low temperature, even when unoccupied, to prevent humid air from stagnating and condensing on cold walls. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation.

For cleaning, a solution of detergent and water is often more effective than bleach for surface mold on paint, as it lifts the spores away. Vinegar can also work. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan.

However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or plaster, or if the area is large, cleaning the surface is only temporary. The mold will return from within the wall. If the wall feels soft, damp, or the mold reappears quickly, the underlying material is compromised. In these cases, and for anyone with respiratory sensitivities, a professional assessment is strongly advised to determine the extent of the problem and ensure it is remediated correctly, which may require controlled removal of affected building materials.
