Can I safely clean black mold with a newborn home?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom seems to be leaking a bit of water into the closet, and now I’ve found these black, speckled patches spreading on the back wall and a few of our shoe boxes. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. With a newborn at home, I’m worried—is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Black mold growth from AC condensation is a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially during summer months. With a newborn at home, do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the underlying moisture problem or kill the mold roots; it can also release harmful fumes and spores into the air, which is a significant risk for an infant's developing respiratory system.

The presence of active growth spreading from a water leak indicates a persistent moisture issue that must be professionally resolved first. The initial step is to stop the leak at its source, which is likely a clogged condensate drain line or a faulty installation—a common problem with year-round AC use. Until the leak is fixed, the mold will continue to return regardless of cleaning.

For a situation involving a newborn and active spread, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact mold species through lab testing, which is crucial for assessing health risks, and safely contain the area during remediation using HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. Look for a provider certified by the Dubai Municipality or with DM-approved technicians who can provide a detailed report and post-remediation verification. In the interim, keep the closet closed and the bedroom well-ventilated to minimize spore exposure.
