Can I safely clean closet mold with bleach myself?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom’s walk-in closet, which barely gets any sun, has developed these dark blackish-green spots in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. It’s been slowly growing since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, and I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse. Is this something I can safely clean with a bleach solution myself, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional company for this?

For a small, surface-level patch, you can attempt a DIY cleaning. However, the key is not just to remove the visible stain but to address the underlying moisture problem, which in Dubai's climate is often persistent high humidity or condensation from AC systems.

Bleach is not the recommended solution. It can lighten the stain but often fails to kill the mold roots on porous surfaces like drywall. More importantly, it poses respiratory risks in an enclosed space and does not address the spores. A better DIY approach is to use a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water, applied with a spray bottle, scrubbed gently, and then dried completely.

Given that this is in a closet where air circulation is poor and the growth has been spreading for months, the issue is likely more than surface-deep. The mold may have penetrated the wall material itself. In such cases, scrubbing the surface can inadvertently release a large number of spores into the air, potentially worsening allergy symptoms and spreading the contamination.

A professional inspection is strongly advised here. They can identify the exact moisture source—often a cold spot from an AC duct causing condensation—and assess the extent of the growth within the wall cavity. For health safety and to prevent recurrence, the affected drywall or insulation often needs to be safely removed and replaced, not just superficially cleaned. This level of containment and remediation requires professional equipment and techniques to be done safely.
