Can I safely remove black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. It's about the size of a dinner plate and the room has started to smell damp. I'm handy with DIY fixes but my wife is worried about the health risks. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

In Dubai's climate, that damp smell and visible growth are strong indicators of an ongoing moisture issue, likely from AC condensation or high humidity. For a patch the size of a dinner plate, you can attempt a DIY clean if the source of moisture is completely resolved.
First, identify and fix the leak. If it's from the AC unit, the drain line may be clogged or the insulation faulty; this must be repaired before any cleaning, or the mold will return quickly. For cleaning, avoid bleach as it primarily bleaches the colour and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. A solution of distilled white vinegar is more effective at killing many common mould types. Spray it on, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores during the process. However, DIY is only for surface-level mould on non-porous materials. If the drywall or backing board is soft, stained, or the mould has penetrated, the material likely needs to be cut out and replaced, as the root structure will remain. The damp smell you mention suggests deeper penetration may be possible. Given the location in a bedroom and the concern for health risks, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the full extent of the water damage and conduct air or swab tests to identify the mould species, which determines the actual risk level. This is crucial for peace of mind, especially with family members who may have allergies or respiratory sensitivities. In Dubai, reputable remediation companies should provide a detailed scope of work and post-remediation verification, often including lab results, to confirm the environment has been returned to a safe standard. |
