Can I safely remove black mold myself with my wife pregnant?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It's been so humid lately and I think it might be spreading from the AC unit on the other side of that wall. My wife is pregnant and I'm worried about the spores, but I'm not sure if it's a big enough job to call a professional.
Is this something I can safely clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to get a mold removal company in to handle it?

The short answer is no, you should not attempt to remove that mold yourself while your wife is pregnant. The primary concern is that any DIY cleaning method, like scrubbing with vinegar or bleach, will disturb the colony and aerosolize a high concentration of spores into your bedroom's air. For someone who is pregnant, this poses an unnecessary risk of respiratory irritation and potential allergic reactions.
Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact you suspect a link to the AC unit, this indicates a potential moisture source that needs to be professionally identified and resolved. A small visible patch often means a larger problem is hidden within the wall cavity or AC system. Simply wiping the surface will not address this, and the mold will return. The safest approach is a professional inspection. A certified inspector can assess the true extent of the growth, identify the species (to confirm if it's the common but still problematic Cladosporium or something more concerning like Stachybotrys), and locate the exact moisture source. For a pregnant household, containment and air scrubbing during remediation are critical to prevent cross-contamination. They will also be able to verify the AC unit on the other side of the wall is not contaminated and spreading spores throughout your home. Until a professional can assess, keep the closet door closed and avoid disturbing the area. Ensure your AC is running well to keep indoor humidity below 60%, which can help slow any further spread. |
