Can I safely remove black mold myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It started appearing a few weeks after that really humid spell we had last month, and now it's creeping up the wall behind the clothes. I'm worried but also wondering if I can just scrub it off myself with some bleach or if I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here. Is this something I can handle on my own safely?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) caused by a one-time spill, DIY can be safe. For a recurring problem in a closet, especially with children showing symptoms, professional assessment is strongly recommended.
In Dubai's climate, that wall likely has persistent moisture from high humidity or a hidden condensation issue. Simply scrubbing the surface with bleach will not address the root cause, and the mold will return. Bleach also fails on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only treats the surface stain, not the hyphae (roots) growing within the material. For a small, contained area, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Use a dedicated mold cleaner or a vinegar solution, not bleach, and scrub the area. However, the key is to identify and stop the moisture source. Is it a leaking AC pipe in the wall, condensation from an exterior wall, or humidity trapped by stored clothes? This diagnostic step is critical. Given the spread you describe and the correlation with your children's coughing, this exceeds a simple surface clean. The mold has likely penetrated the wall. Disturbing it during DIY removal can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the air quality and your children's symptoms. A professional inspection can identify the species and, more importantly, use moisture meters to find the exact water source to prevent regrowth. They will also contain the area during removal to protect the rest of your home. |
