Can I safely remove closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has felt really damp since the humidity started a few weeks ago, and I just found a bunch of black spots on the back wall and on a couple of leather bags. I’m worried it’s spreading but also not sure if it’s something I can just clean with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional to check the entire room. Is a DIY mold cleanup in a closet like this a bad idea, or is it safe to handle on my own?

DIY removal is risky for mold in a closet due to Dubai's high humidity. If the mold is extensive (covering over one square meter), has penetrated porous materials like drywall, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the hidden moisture source.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can clean it with a vinegar solution or detergent, but bleach is ineffective as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. The key is controlling humidity; run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly to prevent recurrence.

Since this is on leather bags and a wall, and you feel dampness, the moisture is likely from condensation or a minor seepage issue common in villas here. Without identifying and rectifying that source, the mold will return. A professional inspection can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the root cause, which is often hidden within walls or under floors. For health safety and a permanent solution, an assessment is the most reliable course of action.
