Can I salvage moldy clothes from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking for a while, and I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes to find black fuzzy mold all over my favorite jackets. It’s been super humid in Dubai the last month and I guess the moisture built up. What’s the fastest way to get this cleaned and salvaged, or is it all a total loss?

Based on the conditions you've described—prolonged AC condensate leak, Dubai's high ambient humidity, and black fuzzy growth on natural fiber jackets—this is a significant mold contamination event. The first step is to isolate the affected garments immediately in a sealed plastic bag to prevent cross-contamination to other areas of your home.

Assessing salvageability depends on the fabric type and the extent of the growth. For natural fibers like wool or cotton, mold can penetrate deeply, making complete remediation difficult. Synthetic materials may be easier to clean superficially. A thorough inspection is required to determine if the mold has compromised the material's integrity. Do not attempt to brush off the mold, as this will aerosolize the spores.

The most effective cleaning method for valuable items is professional hygienization, which includes HEPA vacuuming, followed by specialized antimicrobial treatment, and ozone or thermal drying to eradicate spores and eliminate the musty odor. DIY methods with vinegar or baking soda are often insufficient for this level of infestation and can set stains.

Given the source was an AC leak, I strongly recommend a professional indoor environmental inspection. The moisture has likely seeped into the closet structure (drywall, flooring), creating a hidden reservoir for mold that will continue to cause problems unless addressed. This is a common issue in Dubai due to year-round AC use and condensation management failures.
