Can I treat closet mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to feel damp, and I just pulled out a couple of winter jackets to find patches of black mold on them. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried the issue is inside the wall itself. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray and a dehumidifier, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described—dampness on an external wall and visible mold growth on belongings—this is a strong indicator of a significant moisture intrusion issue, not merely surface condensation. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity conflicts with aggressively air-conditioned interiors, interstitial condensation within walls is a common failure point. The mold on your jackets is a symptom; the root cause is likely inside the wall cavity.

While a bleach solution can remove visible surface stains, it is ineffective and even counterproductive for porous materials like drywall and textiles. Bleach does not kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold and its high water content can actually feed further microbial growth. A dehumidifier is an excellent preventative tool but will not address existing, established colonization within a concealed space.

For this scenario, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact location and extent of the moisture source behind the wall, which is critical for a permanent solution. Remediation in such cases often requires controlled demolition, advanced drying techniques, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to ensure the mold is eradicated at its source.

Attempting a DIY fix risks inadequate containment, spreading spores to other parts of your home, and missing the primary issue, leading to rapid recurrence.
