Can I treat damp wall mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It must have been growing slowly for a while, but I only saw it when I pulled the wardrobe out to rearrange the room. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch. Is this something I can treat myself with a bleach solution, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

The damp wall and black spots behind your wardrobe in JVC are classic signs of a hidden moisture issue, very common here due to our high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution (never bleach, as it doesn't kill the root and can worsen indoor air quality) can be attempted after fixing the moisture source.
However, your situation suggests a larger, established problem. The dampness indicates an active leak or severe condensation, likely from the AC line or a wall seepage. Spreading spots mean the mould colony is mature and has likely penetrated the plasterboard or paint. Disturbing it yourself risks releasing a large amount of spores into your bedroom. In Dubai, professional remediation is strongly advised for damp walls. The process isn't just wiping surfaces; it involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, HEPA-vacuuming, and applying antimicrobial coatings to prevent regrowth. Crucially, they will diagnose and resolve the root moisture cause, which is essential in our climate to stop it returning immediately. A reputable company will provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the space is safe, which is your only true confirmation the problem is solved. |
