Can I treat this mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit, and now I'm seeing a few small black spots on the wall behind the curtain. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back after a few days, and the room just feels damp. Is this something I can keep treating myself or do I need to call a professional company to get rid of it for good?

The recurring mold after a vinegar wipe means the moisture source is still active. In Dubai's climate, continuous AC operation creates significant condensation; a small leak inside the unit or its drain line provides the constant dampness mold needs to thrive. You're likely only treating the visible surface growth, not the hidden reservoir feeding it.

For a small, isolated patch, a thorough DIY approach can work. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not just vinegar, and scrub the area. Crucially, you must fix the AC leak—clear the clogged drain line or seal the leaky connection. Then run a dehumidifier in the room for several days to dry the wall cavity completely.

However, since the mold returned once and the room feels persistently damp, a professional inspection is wise. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness within the wall that you cannot see. For rental properties, Dubai Municipality's public health department has guidelines on landlord responsibilities for fixing leaks that cause habitability issues.

If the affected area is larger than one square meter, or if anyone in the home has respiratory sensitivities, calling a company with a microbiology lab for identification is strongly recommended. They can confirm the species and ensure the remediation plan addresses the root cause, not just the visible spots.
