Can I treat wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s in a shaded corner of our villa in Jumeirah and the AC drip pan might be the cause. Is this something I can treat myself with bleach, or should I call a professional company for a proper assessment, and what would that likely cost?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation-related mold, extremely common in Dubai villas due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The shaded corner and potential AC drip pan issue create the perfect damp environment for it to thrive.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Use a mixture of detergent and water or a dedicated mold remover, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall. Scrub thoroughly, ensure the area dries completely, and address the moisture source—check if the AC drain line is clogged or the drip pan is overflowing.

However, given this is behind furniture and spreading, a DIY approach is likely insufficient. The hidden nature suggests a larger colony, and the moisture source needs professional diagnosis. Disturbing it can release a high concentration of spores into your bedroom.

A professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will identify the exact mold species (some are more problematic than others) and use moisture meters to pinpoint the water intrusion's origin, whether from the AC system, a leak, or condensation. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing affected materials, and HEPA vacuuming to clear spores. The cost for an inspection and remediation plan varies significantly based on the infestation's scale and accessibility, but for a contained bedroom wall, it is generally considered a manageable project. You would need to request a site-specific assessment for an accurate scope and quote. The critical step is fixing the moisture problem; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of cleaning.
