Can mold cause my kids' cough and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches ever since the weather got humid a few weeks ago. I’m starting to worry it’s because of the black spots I’ve found behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall. We’re in an older building in Deira. Can anyone recommend a reliable mold inspection company that can also tell us if this is the cause of their symptoms?

Yes, mold can absolutely cause the symptoms you're describing. The persistent cough and headaches in your children are consistent with mold exposure, particularly in a humid climate like Dubai's. The black spots behind the wardrobe are a major red flag. This location is a classic problem area in older Deira buildings, where exterior walls can develop condensation from the constant contrast between blistering outdoor heat and chilled indoor AC air, creating a perfect damp environment for mold to thrive.

You are right to be concerned and to connect the timing of the symptoms with the increased humidity. For a situation like this, a visual check is not enough. A proper inspection should include moisture mapping of that wall to find the source of the dampness and air sampling to identify the types and concentrations of mold spores in your bedroom's air. This is crucial because while many molds just cause allergic reactions, some species can produce mycotoxins that lead to more significant health issues like the headaches you mentioned.

You need a company that does not just offer cleaning, but provides a full diagnostic report with lab results from a certified microbiology lab. This evidence is what you need to present to your building management if the issue is structural, and it will definitively show if the mold levels in your room are the likely culprit. Look for providers that are certified by DM or DHA and can show you exactly how they will test and what the results mean. Avoid any company that immediately recommends remediation without first providing you with a detailed, verifiable inspection report.
