Can wardrobe mold cause my child's persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe, probably from the last humid spell. My youngest has had a persistent cough and a runny nose for a month now that just won't go away, and I'm starting to worry. Is it possible for mold in a closed-off room like that to cause these kinds of respiratory symptoms, even if we're not in that closet every day?

Yes, the mold in your wardrobe can absolutely be the cause of your child's persistent cough and runny nose. Mold releases microscopic spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which easily travel throughout your home's interior via air currents from your AC system. Even a closed-off room is not sealed; these particles circulate and can irritate the respiratory tract, leading to exactly the symptoms you describe, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

The persistent nature of the symptoms is a strong indicator of a continuous exposure source. Dubai's high humidity, especially during recent spells, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in poorly ventilated spaces like closets on external walls, where condensation can form. The AC's constant operation can sometimes mask the musty smell, but not the health effects.

For a case of this size and with existing health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source (often a small leak or condensation from the AC ducting in the ceiling void) and assess the full extent, as what's visible is often just a fraction of the actual growth. Remediation must address the root cause, not just wipe away the visible patch. A lab analysis of the mold type can also provide clarity on the specific health risks present. In the interim, try to improve air circulation in that room and keep the wardrobe doors closed to minimize spore dispersal until it can be properly handled.
