Can we clean AC mold ourselves or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit for the last few weeks, and now I'm seeing black speckles growing around the vent on the wall. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried it's inside the unit itself and making our allergies worse. Is this something we can safely clean ourselves, or do we absolutely need to call a professional AC cleaning service to handle it?

The black speckles around your AC vent are likely mould growth, a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC operation, which creates the perfect environment for condensation. While surface mould on the wall can sometimes be cleaned, the leak indicates a moisture source from within the AC unit itself, which is the primary concern.

For a minor, visible patch only on the wall, a DIY clean with a diluted vinegar solution (not bleach, as it can irritate airways and doesn't prevent regrowth) can be attempted. However, if the mould is inside the unit or the leak has been ongoing for weeks, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Spores are likely being circulated throughout the room, which would explain the worsening allergies.

A proper remediation involves identifying and fixing the leak's source, then cleaning the internal cooling coils and drip pan—areas you cannot safely or effectively access yourself. In the UAE, many providers offer a combined service of AC repair and microbiological cleaning. The key is to choose one that provides documented evidence of the cleanup, such as before-and-after photos or lab test results, to ensure the issue is resolved at its source and not just superficially wiped.
