Can we clean black mold ourselves or need professionals?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a big patch of black mold in the back of our bedroom closet, probably from a small AC leak we didn't catch. My husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches for the past month. Is this something we can clean ourselves with bleach, or do we absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

The decision depends on the size of the patch. For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach may be sufficient. However, given that the mold is in a closet (indicating poor ventilation) and you're already experiencing health symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.

In Dubai's climate, simply wiping the visible mold with bleach is rarely a complete solution. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall or wood; it does not kill the roots. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to return quickly from the hidden moisture source—likely that AC leak you mentioned. The leak itself must be repaired first; otherwise, the mold will recur.

Professional remediation is advised for areas larger than one square meter, for mold caused by contaminated AC systems (which can spread spores throughout the apartment), or when health symptoms are present. Certified companies follow strict protocols: they contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, use HEPA filtration to remove spores from the air, and employ antimicrobial agents that penetrate porous materials. The most critical step they provide is identifying and resolving the underlying moisture issue to prevent recurrence.

Given your described scenario—health symptoms, a probable AC leak, and a confined space—the root cause needs expert diagnosis. A proper inspection can verify the mold type and extent, ensuring the cleanup method is effective and your indoor air quality is restored.
