Can we clean mold ourselves or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting bigger. My wife has started waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. Is this something we can clean ourselves with bleach, or do we absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

That black patch behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation mould, very common in Dubai's climate. The wall is likely a cold bridge where the outside heat meets your cooled indoor air, creating moisture.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Do not use bleach—it's mostly water and can feed future mould growth while potentially damaging drywall. Instead, use a dedicated mould remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source by improving air circulation around the wardrobe.

Given the size you describe, its growth, and your wife's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning only addresses the visible surface, not the mould roots potentially inside the wall or the underlying dampness. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of water intrusion. They can also take an air or surface sample for lab analysis to identify the mould species, which is crucial for understanding potential health risks and planning the correct remediation method. In many Dubai villas and apartments, this pattern indicates a need to check external sealants and insulation on that wall.
