Can we clean toddler's room mold ourselves or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried because my toddler has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves or do we need to call a professional mold cleaning service?

It depends on the size and type of mold. For a small patch (under one square foot) of surface mold on a non-porous material like tile or glass, you can clean it yourself safely. However, given the location in a closet and the potential AC leak source, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to prevent recurrence.

In Dubai's climate, indoor mold is often fueled by high humidity and AC condensation issues. Simply wiping the visible patch with a bleach solution is a temporary fix; the underlying moisture problem must be solved first. For porous materials like drywall or the back of the closet, the mold likely penetrates deeper than what is visible.

Your toddler's stuffy nose and cough are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly in a sleep environment. This health concern elevates the risk. A professional inspection can identify the mold species through lab analysis and assess the full extent of the contamination, which is often not visible to the naked eye. They will also locate and address the moisture source, which is critical to prevent the mold from returning immediately after cleaning.

For a child's room, the safest approach is to have a certified professional handle the remediation. They use containment procedures and HEPA filtration to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home during the cleaning process, which is a significant risk with DIY methods.
