Can we remove black mold ourselves with a baby nearby?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago. My husband thinks we can just scrub it with bleach, but I'm worried about our baby sleeping in the next room.
Is this something we can safely handle ourselves with a product from ACE, or do we need to call a professional mold remediation company?

With a baby in the next room, the primary concern is airborne spore dispersal during any cleaning attempt, which can temporarily worsen indoor air quality.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be effective if done with extreme caution. Use a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with a detergent solution (like a few drops of dish soap in water) to gently wipe the mold off the surface. Avoid bleach; it's mostly water and can feed future mold growth on porous surfaces while failing to address the root cause. The goal is to physically remove the biomass without creating an aerosol. Seal the cloth in a plastic bag immediately after use. However, the presence of a baby and the fact this is on an interior wall are significant factors. An interior wall patch often indicates a hidden moisture source, like condensation from an AC duct inside the wall or a small plumbing leak. Simply scrubbing the visible mold will almost certainly result in it returning. The high humidity here creates perpetual conditions for regrowth if the moisture issue isn't professionally identified and resolved. Given these factors, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to find the source of the dampness inside the wall. For remediation with an infant present, containment barriers and HEPA air scrubbers are used to prevent spores from spreading into the living space, which is a critical step a DIY clean cannot provide. |
