Can we remove black mold ourselves with a toddler?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow leak in the AC unit. My husband wants to just scrub it with bleach this weekend, but I’m worried about our toddler who has been sneezing a lot lately. Is this something we can safely handle ourselves with a trip to ACE, or do we absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company?

With a toddler in the home, DIY mold removal carries significant risk. The primary concern is that scrubbing a mold patch can aerosolize spores and mycotoxins, which your child's developing respiratory system is more vulnerable to. The sneezing you've noticed could very well be a reaction.
For a small patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach is possible, but bleach is not recommended. It’s mostly water, which can feed residual mold roots, and its fumes are harmful. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar. Crucially, contain the area with plastic sheeting, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure your toddler is completely away from the home during the process and for several hours after while everything settles. However, given that this is likely from an AC leak—a very common issue in Dubai due to condensation—simply cleaning the visible patch is often a temporary fix. The leak itself must be repaired, and the hidden moisture inside the wall or ceiling cavity needs to be addressed. Unchecked, this creates a recurring mold reservoir. For any mold issue with a suspected water source and a vulnerable occupant, a professional assessment is strongly advised. They can identify the exact species (as 'black mold' is a broad term with varying health impacts), use containment to prevent cross-contamination, and locate the full extent of the moisture. In many cases, the peace of mind that comes with a verified, complete solution outweighs the initial cost of a proper inspection. |
