Can we remove closet mold ourselves or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has had a damp smell for a while, but we just discovered a huge patch of black mold on the back wall, probably from a hidden AC leak. We’re worried about our health and our clothes stored in there. Is this something we can handle ourselves with cleaners from ACE, or do we absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company, and what kind of cost are we looking at for a job like this?

Based on the description of a "huge patch" of black mold in your Jumeirah villa, likely from an AC leak, I strongly recommend against a do-it-yourself approach and advise you to call a professional remediation company immediately.

The primary reason is the suspected water source. A hidden AC leak indicates an ongoing moisture issue that must be professionally identified and repaired first; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of any cleaning. Furthermore, the extent of the growth ("huge patch") suggests a significant infestation that likely extends beyond the visible surface into the wall cavity. Disturbing this mold during cleaning will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, posing a serious health risk to your family and contaminating other areas of your home, including the clothing stored in the closet.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for mold, a professional protocol is essential. This involves isolating the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of affected porous materials (like drywall and possibly insulation), using industrial-grade HEPA filtration to clean the air, and applying specialized antimicrobial agents. A pro will also identify and rectify the root moisture cause to prevent recurrence.

For a master bedroom closet of this nature, remediation costs can vary but typically start from AED 2,500 upwards, depending on the extent of the damage and the required repairs.

Given the health risks and potential for property damage, a professional inspection and remediation is the only safe and effective solution. I recommend you contact Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment. They can be reached at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
