Can we remove small mold ourselves or hire pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. My husband’s asthma has been worse lately, and I’m worried it’s connected. For a small area like this, is it something we can tackle ourselves with products from ACE, or should we just hire a professional mold remediation company and what’s a reasonable cost we should expect in Dubai?

Small mold patches under 1 square meter can often be handled yourself if the moisture source is fixed. For a closet corner from an AC leak, first fix the leak completely. Then clean the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses during cleaning. Avoid bleach; it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials.

Given your husband's worsened asthma, DIY is not recommended. Asthma is a significant risk factor for severe reactions to mold spores, even from a small patch. Disturbing it during cleaning can aerosolize spores and exacerbate his condition. The Dubai climate means high humidity can cause mold to regrow quickly if not addressed professionally.

Hire a professional remediation company. They will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and apply antimicrobial solutions to prevent regrowth. Crucially, they can provide a clearance test to confirm the space is safe for an asthmatic. Look for a company that follows IICRC standards and can provide documented results from a third-party lab.

Costs for a small job like this vary based on the extent of the leak's damage behind the wall. Expect a qualitative difference between a basic clean-up and a full assessment with containment and post-remediation verification. Always request a detailed assessment and quote before any work begins.
