Can we safely clean black mold causing allergies?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp lately, even with the AC on. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes for the past month. Could this mold be the cause of his allergies, and what’s the safest way for us to clean it ourselves?

Small patches of black mold, like the one you've described, can definitely cause the allergy symptoms your husband is experiencing—stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and a general feeling of congestion are very common reactions. The damp feeling in the room, even with AC, points to high humidity, which is a persistent challenge in Dubai's climate and allows mold to thrive.
For a patch under 10 square feet, you can attempt to clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 cup of household bleach to 1 gallon of water). Ensure the area is completely dry afterwards. Fixing the moisture source is critical; this is often condensation from an AC unit or a leak. Check if your AC drain line is clogged or if the unit is set to a temperature causing excessive condensation on cold surfaces. However, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the patch is larger than a square meter, or you suspect it has spread inside the wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning can sometimes disturb spores and spread the problem. A proper inspection includes identifying the exact mold species and the full extent of the moisture issue, which is often the only way to achieve a long-term solution. |
