Can we safely clean moldy clothes or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall has felt damp for a couple of months, but since the humidity spiked, I've started waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. What is the most effective and safe way to clean this ourselves, and at what point should we just call a professional mold removal company?

Based on your description of the symptoms and the visible growth, you are dealing with a significant mold issue. The dampness on the outside wall suggests a condensation problem, which is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and the constant cycling of air conditioning systems. The black and green fuzzy mold is likely actively sporulating.

For the clothes, you can attempt to clean them if the infestation is superficial. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during handling. Take the items outside to avoid spreading spores indoors. For washable fabrics, use a solution of hot water and detergent, adding 1 cup of white vinegar or a mold-killing additive. Sun-drying is highly effective, as UV light is a natural disinfectant. However, if the mold has deeply penetrated the material or caused permanent stains, the items should be professionally cleaned or discarded.

Crucially, cleaning the clothes only addresses the symptom, not the source. The presence of mold on your wardrobe and the associated health effects indicate a larger contamination within the property. The damp wall is the moisture source, and the mold has almost certainly colonized the structure behind and inside the wardrobe. DIY cleaning with bleach or other store-bought solutions is not recommended; they are often ineffective on porous surfaces, can exacerbate spore release, and do not address the root moisture problem.

Given the health symptoms (stuffy nose, itchy eyes) and the extent of growth you've discovered, this is a case for professional assessment. We strongly recommend you cease DIY efforts and call for a professional inspection. Our certified experts at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment using moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the contamination, then execute a safe, compliant remediation plan.
