Can we safely remove small mold patch ourselves in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a small AC leak we didn't catch. My husband wants to just clean it himself with bleach, but I'm worried about the health risks for our toddler and the cost of hiring a professional seems really high. Is a small patch like this something we can safely handle on our own, or is professional remediation actually necessary here in Dubai's climate?

A small patch from a known AC leak can often be handled safely if you take proper precautions, but Dubai's climate adds significant risk. The high humidity here allows mold to regrow quickly if the moisture source isn't completely eliminated and the area isn't thoroughly dried.

For a patch smaller than one square foot, you can clean it yourself. Do not use bleach; it is mostly water and can feed future mold growth while failing to kill the roots. Instead, use a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin. Seal off the closet from the rest of the room with plastic sheeting to prevent spreading spores during cleaning.

The critical step is fixing the AC leak and ensuring the wall and surrounding area are completely dry. Use a dehumidifier and fans for at least 48 hours after cleaning. Without this, regrowth is highly likely.

However, given this is in a bedroom with a toddler, who are more susceptible to respiratory irritation, and the fact the mold is inside a wall cavity from a leak, a professional inspection is strongly advised. What you see is often just the surface growth; the structure inside the wall could be more extensively affected. In Dubai, professional remediation includes containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence, which DIY methods cannot achieve. For a confirmed small, surface-level patch, DIY is possible with extreme care, but for peace of mind and guaranteed results, an assessment is a prudent choice.
