Child-safe AC mold cleaning for Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold in our villa's main AC unit. We live in Al Barsha and ever since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, there's been a visible black dust around the vents and a really damp smell in the master bedroom. What's the most effective and child-safe way to get the entire system professionally cleaned?

Stop using the AC unit immediately and have it professionally inspected. Visible black dust and a damp smell indicate active mold growth, which is common in Dubai's high humidity and can directly cause the respiratory symptoms you're describing in children.

For a villa system, effective remediation requires more than just cleaning the vents. The entire ductwork, evaporator coils, drip pan, and plenum must be treated. The most child-safe method uses dry vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) or similar non-toxic, chemical-free biocides that leave no residue. Avoid companies that only fog or spray disinfectants, as these can leave behind irritants. The process should include HEPA vacuuming of all ducts to physically remove spores before treatment.

Ensure the company provides a post-remediation verification (PRV) test from an independent lab. This is the only way to confirm the mold count inside your living space has returned to a safe, background level. Dubai Municipality guidelines for indoor air quality recommend this verification step.

Given the climate, consider adding a UV-C light system inside the AC unit to prevent future growth on wet coils. For a permanent solution, also address the humidity source; ensure your AC is correctly sized and functioning to remove humidity effectively, not just cool the air.
