Child-safe black mold removal in humid bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I'm starting to worry it's because of the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment. It's been so humid lately that it seems to be spreading along the grout no matter how much I scrub. What's the most effective and child-safe way to get rid of this for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity is a common trigger for respiratory irritation, including coughing in children. The constant moisture from showers combined with year-round AC use creates a perfect environment for it to regrow after surface cleaning.
For immediate, child-safe removal, use undiluted white vinegar. Spray it generously on the mold, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Vinegar kills the mold spores effectively and is far safer than bleach, which just bleaches the color and releases harsh fumes. For stubborn growth, a paste of baking soda and water can provide extra abrasion. Always ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning. To prevent its return, you must control the humidity. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet tiles and glass surfaces with a squeegee. In severe cases where it's deep in the grout or behind silicone seals, the only permanent solution is to remove the contaminated sealant, treat the area, and re-seal it properly. If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter) or if the coughing persists after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if there's a hidden moisture source, like a leak, and perform air quality testing to see if spores have spread to other rooms, which is a common issue with AC systems here. |
