Child-safe mold removal for bathroom causing kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub, the black spots just come back. What is the most effective and child-safe way to get rid of this mold for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's climate is a common trigger for respiratory irritation like coughing, especially in children. The high humidity combined with condensation from showers and year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for regrowth. Simply scrubbing visible spots often fails because it doesn't address the hidden moisture source or the microscopic spores.
For a child-safe DIY approach, start by improving ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the bathroom door open to reduce trapped humidity. Wipe down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee immediately. For cleaning, avoid bleach as it only bleaches the color and emits harsh fumes. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a baking soda paste is safer and effective for surface mold on non-porous tiles. Always wear a mask and gloves, and ensure the area is well-ventilated during cleaning with children kept away. However, if the mold returns persistently despite these measures, or if it's growing on porous surfaces like drywall or grout, the issue is likely deeper. In such cases, professional assessment is recommended to identify the underlying moisture problem—often a small leak or seepage behind the tiles—and to safely remediate the root cause. A certified inspector can also determine if the species present is a type known to cause more significant health effects, which is a prudent step when children are experiencing symptoms. |
