Child-safe way to remove bathroom mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just discovered black speckles in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. We're in a villa in Jumeirah and with all the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse really quickly. I'm really worried it's affecting their health. What's the most effective and child-safe way to get rid of this mold for good?

The black speckles in your shower grout are likely mold, which thrives in Dubai's high humidity, especially in bathrooms with poor ventilation. Your children's increased coughing could be related, as mold spores are a common irritant for respiratory systems.

For a child-safe DIY approach, start with a solution of white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide. Spray it generously on the affected grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. These are effective and far less hazardous than bleach. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during the process. The key to preventing its return is controlling moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet tiles and glass with a squeegee. A dehumidifier can also help significantly in a large villa bathroom.

If the mold has penetrated deeply into the grout or covers an area larger than a square foot, or if the coughing persists after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the species to confirm its type and use HEPA-filtered equipment to safely contain and remove it without spreading spores throughout your home. In many Dubai villas, the underlying issue is not just surface moisture but potentially a leak behind the tiles that needs to be identified and repaired for a permanent solution.
