Cost of professional mold removal for small area?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It wasn't there during the last summer, but with all the humidity lately, it's really spread. I'm worried about the cost of getting it professionally removed versus trying to clean it myself with bleach. What is the typical price range for professional mold remediation for a small area like this, and is it absolutely necessary to hire someone?

For a small, contained patch like you've described, professional remediation is often not required if you address it promptly and correctly. The cost for such a job is typically minimal, as it's usually charged as a small project or service call rather than a full-scale remediation.

However, hiring a professional becomes necessary if the mold has penetrated the wallboard or underlying structure, which is a common issue in Dubai villas due to condensation from year-round AC use creating damp interiors. If the patch is larger than one square meter, if there's a persistent musty odor, or if household members are experiencing respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—often a small AC leak or external water seepage—to prevent recurrence.

For a surface-level patch, you can clean it yourself. Skip the bleach; it’s mostly water and can feed future mold growth. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and monitor it. Crucially, you must find and eliminate the moisture source. In a closet, this is often caused by lack of air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar and consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside.

If you choose to get a professional assessment, look for a provider that includes a moisture meter reading and can explain the exact cause, not just offer to clean the visible spot.
