Cost to fix black shower grout in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black for a while now, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just comes back. I’m in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’m worried it’s gotten behind the walls. What’s the average cost to get this professionally treated in Dubai, and is it absolutely necessary to hire a company for it?

Black grout in showers is almost always mold, not dirt. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in older buildings with less effective ventilation, this is extremely common. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout and substrate.

If it consistently returns after scrubbing, the moisture source is likely behind the tiles. This is a common issue when the waterproofing membrane behind the tile fails or was never properly installed. A professional inspection is necessary to determine the extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls without unnecessary demolition.

The cost to remediate is entirely dependent on the scope of the problem. Surface cleaning a shower stall is a minor service. However, if the moisture and mold have compromised the wall structure, the project becomes a full remediation: removing tiles, addressing the mold on the substrate, reinstalling a proper waterproofing system, and retiling. This is a significant construction project.

For a definitive answer, you need a diagnostic inspection to assess the moisture levels behind the affected wall. Any reputable provider will offer this assessment first to determine if the issue is superficial or structural before quoting a remediation plan.
