Could a small mold patch cause my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and I’m worried. We live in an older villa in Mirdif and I’ve just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind our bedroom wardrobe, which shares a wall with the kids' bathroom. It’s been so humid lately that the walls never feel completely dry. **Could this small patch of mold behind the furniture really be the cause of their persistent respiratory issues, or am I overreacting?**

Based on the symptoms you describe and the conditions in your Mirdif villa, it is highly probable that the discovered mold is contributing to your children's persistent coughing. A small, visible patch is often just the "tip of the iceberg"; the fuzzy, black appearance suggests active growth, and it is likely that the mold has penetrated deeper into the wall cavity, especially given the constant humidity from the adjacent bathroom and our current climate. In Dubai's high humidity, condensation forms easily on cooler surfaces, particularly behind furniture and within walls that are cooled by year-round AC, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold.

The mycotoxins and allergens released by mold colonies, even small ones, are potent irritants to the respiratory system. Children are particularly susceptible, and chronic exposure can manifest as coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions. You are not overreacting. Disturbing the mold by moving the wardrobe could have already released a significant number of spores into the bedroom's air.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify the full extent of the moisture source and colonization, which is almost always greater than what is visible. Remediation must address the root cause—the moisture—to prevent recurrence, in line with UAE standards for healthy indoor environments.
