Could AC be causing our coughing?« Back to Previous Page

After the recent dust storm, we've had this persistent cough that's really bothering me. My son has been coughing more than usual too, especially at night when we're all in bed. We live on the third floor of a residential building in Dubai and the air feels unusually dry lately. Could the air quality or something related to our new AC be causing these symptoms?

Certainly, the concern about your cough and that of your son after the dust storm could indeed be linked to air quality issues within your home. In Dubai, where we often experience sandstorms and the climate is dry throughout much of the year, it’s not uncommon for such events to impact indoor air quality. The symptoms you're experiencing can sometimes relate to both allergens and irritants that might have been brought into the building.

Firstly, let's consider the role of your AC system. Central air conditioning units are a common feature in Dubai homes, especially during the scorching summer months. However, if not properly maintained or serviced, they can become breeding grounds for dust mites, mold spores, and bacteria. These microorganisms can be particularly problematic when the humidity levels inside the unit are poorly managed.

Given your symptoms, it's prudent to undertake a thorough examination of your AC system as well as the overall indoor environment. Here’s what you should consider:

1. Maintenance Check: Ensure that your air conditioning filters are clean and appropriately sized for your unit. Dirty or clogged filters can trap allergens and bacteria, leading to respiratory issues.

2. Air Quality Testing: It would be beneficial to have a professional perform an indoor air quality test. This can help identify the presence of pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, and mold spores. In Dubai, it’s not uncommon for high CO2 levels due to poor ventilation during closed window periods.

3. Humidity Levels: Check your AC system's humidity control settings. High indoor humidity can exacerbate respiratory issues like coughing and wheezing. Aim to maintain relative humidity between 40% - 60%. You might also want to consider the use of a dehumidifier in conjunction with your AC, especially if you live on an upper floor where moisture tends to accumulate.

4. Ventilation: Ensure that there is adequate ventilation in your home. Even during cooler seasons or after dust storms, it’s important to allow some fresh air exchange to help reduce the concentration of indoor pollutants.

5. Professional Inspection: Given the persistent nature of your symptoms and those of your son, especially at night, it would be wise to contact a professional environmental inspection company based in Dubai. They can provide comprehensive testing and remediation services if any issues are found.

Remember, in the UAE, regulations regarding air quality and indoor environment standards may not be as stringent compared to some other regions, but maintaining a healthy living space is essential for everyone's well-being.
