Could AC mold be causing my child's nighttime cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Sharjah apartment has been leaking a little bit in the master bedroom for the last few weeks. Now my youngest has developed a persistent cough that gets worse at night, and I’m starting to worry about black spots I can see in the corner behind the wardrobe. Could this mold exposure be the cause of her cough, and what’s the first step I should take to deal with it properly?

It is very possible the mold from your AC leak is causing your child's nighttime cough. The humid, recirculated air from a contaminated unit is a common irritant, and symptoms that worsen at night, when the AC runs consistently, are a frequent pattern we observe. The black spots you see are a significant visual confirmation of a problem.

The first step is to stop the exposure. Move your child to another room to sleep, ideally one with a different AC unit, and arrange for a professional inspection. Do not attempt to clean the visible mold yourself, as disturbing it can release a high concentration of spores into the air. In the UAE's climate, where AC systems run year-round, a small leak creates a constant source of moisture that mold thrives on.

A proper inspection should identify the source of the condensation leak for repair and assess the extent of the mold growth, including inside the AC unit itself and any hidden areas. For health-related cases, especially with children, a lab analysis of a surface or air sample is recommended to identify the specific mold species, as this informs the appropriate remediation strategy. This diagnostic approach ensures the solution targets the actual problem, not just the visible symptoms.
