Could AC mold be making my child sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha seems to be constantly leaking, and now we’re getting black spots on the wall behind the kids' beds. My youngest has been sneezing non-stop for the last two weeks and I’m really worried it’s connected. Is this definitely mold and who should I call to get it properly tested and removed?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots are mold and the AC leak is the direct cause. The constant moisture from the leak, combined with Dubai's high humidity, creates an ideal environment for mold growth. The proximity to your child's bed means they are inhaling a high concentration of spores, which commonly causes persistent sneezing, congestion, and other allergy-like respiratory irritation.

The first and most critical step is to stop the moisture source. You must have a certified HVAC technician repair the AC leak immediately; without this, any cleaning is temporary. For a situation involving structural damage (the wall) and health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended over a DIY approach. In the UAE, look for a company that specializes in mold remediation, not just general cleaning, and can provide verifiable proof of their methods.

A proper process involves containment of the area, safe removal of contaminated porous materials like drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the AC unit and ducts. Crucially, they should provide before-and-after testing from an accredited microbiology lab to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels. This documented evidence is what separates a thorough remediation from a superficial cleaning that allows the problem to return. Your child’s symptoms should improve once the source is removed and the area is properly remediated.
