Could AC mold in our villa be causing our sickness?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, and for the last month, my husband and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We’re in a Jumeirah Village Circle villa and I’m really worried this is making us sick. Could this mold in the AC unit be causing our symptoms and how urgent is it to get it cleaned?

Yes, the mold in your AC unit is very likely causing your symptoms. The damp, earthy smell and the visible black and green growth on the filter are clear indicators of microbial contamination. The stuffy noses and sore throats you're experiencing upon waking are classic reactions to breathing in mold spores and fragments that are being circulated throughout your villa's air.

This is a common issue in Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for mold inside units. Condensation provides the moisture, and dust from the air provides the organic material for it to feed on. The situation in your JVC villa is urgent and should be addressed promptly to prevent the contamination from spreading deeper into the ductwork.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with store-bought sprays, as this can aerosolize harmful spores. You need a professional inspection and remediation. The process should involve containment of the unit to prevent cross-contamination, physical removal of the biomass, and application of EPA-approved biocides. Crucially, the company should provide before-and-after testing to verify the air quality has been restored to a safe level. Look for a provider with documented methodologies and a microbiology lab to confirm the results, not just a visual inspection. Resolving this should stop your symptoms.
