Could bathroom black mold be making my son sick?« Back to Previous Page

The bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but now I'm seeing these small black spots growing along the bottom of the shower curtain and in the grout between the tiles. My youngest son has been having a runny nose and a weird cough that won't go away, and I'm starting to worry it's connected. I wipe the walls down after every shower, but the humidity is just so intense. Is this black mold, and could it really be making him sick, or am I just overreacting?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots are mold, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as toxic black mold) or more commonly, Cladosporium or Aspergillus. The symptoms your son is experiencing—a persistent runny nose and cough—are classic indicators of mold-induced allergic reactions or mycotoxin exposure, especially in children who are more susceptible. You are not overreacting; this is a legitimate health concern.

The Dubai climate is a primary catalyst. The extreme humidity, combined with condensation from hot showers and often year-round air conditioning (which can create cold surfaces for condensation to form), creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. Merely wiping surfaces is insufficient, as mold roots (hyphae) penetrate porous materials like grout and drywall.

For definitive identification and to understand the health risk, a professional inspection is critical. We use fiber optics to inspect inside wall cavities and air quality tests to determine spore counts and species. This is essential, as remediation protocols differ based on the mold type.

Do not attempt to clean this with bleach, as it can exacerbate spore release. I strongly recommend you contact our team for a comprehensive assessment. We are certified under Dubai Municipality's stringent environmental health standards and can provide a safe, effective remediation plan.
