Could bathroom mold cause my family's health issues?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and getting headaches for the past month, and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around our bathtub in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. The bathroom doesn’t have a window and the exhaust fan is weak, so it never really dries out. Could this mold be the reason for my family’s health issues and how dangerous is it?

Yes, bathroom mold could absolutely be the cause of your family's persistent coughing and headaches. The black, fuzzy mold you found growing behind the silicone is a classic sign of a chronic moisture issue, and its concealed location means spores have been releasing into your air for some time.

In Dubai's climate, bathrooms without adequate ventilation become incubators for mold due to high humidity and condensation from showers. The types of mold commonly found in these damp environments, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, are known irritants. Inhaling their spores can cause exactly the symptoms you describe—respiratory irritation, coughing, and headaches, with children often being more susceptible.

The first step is to address the moisture source. A weak exhaust fan is insufficient; it should run during and for at least 30 minutes after a shower. Keep the bathroom door open to allow air circulation and use a squeegee on wet surfaces after use.

However, given the extent of growth hidden behind the sealant, a DIY cleaning will likely only address the surface. Disturbing it can aerosolize a large number of spores. For a case like this, a professional inspection is advised to assess the full scope. They can safely remove the contaminated sealant, treat the underlying area, and verify the mold has been adequately addressed. In many cases, a post-remediation test is the only way to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to a safe level.
