Could bathroom mold cause my kids' cough and runny noses?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold growing in the corner of our master bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It’s been getting worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I clean it, it just comes back. Could this be the reason for their constant runny noses and our allergy-like symptoms?

Yes, the black mold in your bathroom is a very likely cause of the persistent cough and runny noses your children are experiencing. In my professional experience here in Dubai, this is a common scenario we encounter, especially in areas like Jumeirah Village Circle.

The type of mold you're describing is almost certainly a variety that produces mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs). When these particles become airborne, they act as potent irritants and allergens to the respiratory system. Children are particularly susceptible due to their developing immune systems and smaller lung capacity. The symptoms you describe—coughing, runny noses, and allergy-like responses—are classic indicators of mold exposure.

The Dubai climate is the primary catalyst. The extreme humidity, combined with year-round air conditioning, creates massive condensation issues. This condensation settles on cold surfaces like bathroom walls and windows, providing the constant moisture mold needs to thrive. Simply cleaning the visible surface does not address the root cause: the moisture problem and the hyphae (root system) of the mold that has likely penetrated the porous grout or drywall.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. DIY cleaning can often aggravate the situation by releasing more spores into the air. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture sources and air sampling to determine the spore count and species present in your apartment's air. This data is crucial for an effective remediation plan.
