Could bathroom mold cause our coughs and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corner of our master bathroom. It's been spreading behind the toilet since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub, the musty smell won't go away. Could this mold in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment be the reason for our persistent sore throats and headaches?

Yes, bathroom mold can absolutely cause the coughs and headaches you're describing. The persistent musty smell is a clear indicator of an active microbial presence, and the symptoms you listed are a common reaction to inhaling mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) they release.

In Dubai's climate, this is a widespread issue. High humidity, especially during summer months, leads to condensation in bathrooms. This moisture, combined with organic matter like soap scum, creates an ideal environment for mold to thrive behind toilets and in corners, even with regular scrubbing. Surface cleaning often fails to address the root colony growing on or within the porous grout and drywall.

For a recurring problem with health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the specific mold species present—some types like Aspergillus are more strongly linked to respiratory irritation—and assess if moisture has penetrated behind the tiles, which requires more than surface-level cleaning. In many JVC apartments, the underlying issue is inadequate bathroom ventilation that can't keep up with the local humidity levels.

Until you can get an assessment, increase airflow by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers and keeping the bathroom door open. A dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce ambient moisture. For your family's health, identifying and properly remediating the source is more effective than repeated surface cleaning.
