Could bedroom mold cause my kids' persistent coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of our built-in wardrobe in the master bedroom. I found a patch of black fuzzy mold on the wall behind them. Could this mold in our bedroom be the reason for their persistent coughs and runny noses?

Based on my professional experience in mold inspection and remediation in the UAE, it is highly probable that the mold you discovered is the cause of your children's persistent respiratory symptoms. The black, fuzzy growth you describe is characteristic of a mold colony, and its location in a bedroom wardrobe is a significant health concern.

In Dubai's climate, high ambient humidity and the constant use of air conditioning create ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like wardrobes on external walls. Condensation can form, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive. When disturbed, these colonies release microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are then inhaled. For children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, this exposure commonly manifests as a chronic cough, runny nose, wheezing, and other allergic reactions.

This is not something to manage with DIY cleaning. Improper disturbance can aerosolize a much larger quantity of spores, exacerbating the problem. Furthermore, the visible patch is often just the "tip of the iceberg," with a larger network of growth potentially hidden within the wall cavity.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, emphasize maintaining healthy indoor air quality. A professional inspection is crucial to identify the exact species of mold (some, like Stachybotrys, are more toxigenic), assess the full extent of contamination, and identify the moisture source. Based on this assessment, a certified remediation plan, such as those we provide at Saniservice, is required to safely remove the mold and implement solutions to prevent recurrence.

For your family's health, I strongly recommend a professional evaluation. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
