Could black dust in my AC be mold causing cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Mirdif has been making us all cough and feel stuffy, especially my youngest. I just pulled the vent cover off in the master bedroom and found what looks like black dust all over the inside of the duct and the filter is damp. Could this be mold causing our symptoms, and how do I find someone to properly test it?

Based on your description, the black dust and damp filter in your AC unit are highly indicative of microbial growth, likely mold. The symptoms you describe—coughing and stuffiness, particularly in a child—are classic reactions to airborne mold spores. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and year-round AC use, condensation within the ductwork is a common failure point. This moisture, combined with dust and organic debris, creates an ideal environment for mold proliferation.

A visual inspection is a good first step, but it is not conclusive. The substance could be a mixture of mold, bacteria, and accumulated soot. Proper identification requires professional testing. In the UAE, this involves taking air and surface samples, which are then analyzed by an accredited laboratory to determine the spore types and concentrations. This is critical, as certain species like Aspergillus or Stachybotrys (black mold) require specific remediation protocols.

I strongly recommend you cease using the affected AC unit immediately to prevent further spore dispersal and engage a certified mold inspection company. They will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including using tools like borescopes to inspect deep within the ducts, moisture meters to find condensation sources, and professional air pumps for accurate sampling.
