Could black mold be causing my kids' cough and red eyes?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and their eyes are always red and watery. I finally pulled out their big toy chest from against the bedroom wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold growing behind it, probably from the humidity. I’m panicking now that this is what’s been making them sick. Could this mold exposure be the cause of their symptoms and what should I do for them health-wise right now?

Yes, the black mold you found could absolutely be the cause of your children's persistent cough and eye irritation. These are very common symptoms of mold exposure, especially in children who are more sensitive. The constant humidity in Dubai, combined with condensation from air conditioning and lack of air circulation behind furniture, creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive.
For their health right now, keep them out of the bedroom and any adjacent rooms until the area is professionally assessed and remediated. A thorough cleaning of their bedding, stuffed animals, and any fabrics in the room is also advised. While over-the-counter antihistamines may help manage their allergy-like symptoms, a visit to a pediatrician is important to rule out any secondary respiratory issues and to discuss their exposure. Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the contamination throughout your home. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for mold remediation in villas to ensure it is handled safely and effectively. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often a small leak or condensation from an AC unit—and a professional team will contain the area, remove the contaminated materials, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. After remediation, a post-clearance test by a third-party microbiology lab is the only way to verify the spore count in the room has returned to a safe level before your children return. Addressing the root cause, like improving ventilation or repairing a leak, is crucial to prevent it from returning. |
