Could black mold be causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, and I just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in an older building in Deira and with the humidity lately, the walls never feel fully dry. Could this mold be the reason for their persistent coughs and should I be taking them to a doctor immediately?

Based on my professional experience as a certified mold inspector in Dubai, it is highly probable that the black mold discovered behind your wardrobe is contributing to your children's persistent coughs. The primary health effects of indoor mold exposure are respiratory in nature, including chronic coughing, wheezing, and throat irritation, particularly in children who are more susceptible.

The conditions you describe are classic for our region. Older buildings in Deira often have less effective insulation and can suffer from rising damp. When combined with Dubai's high ambient humidity and the constant use of air conditioning, which can create significant temperature differentials, condensation forms on cooler surfaces like exterior walls. This persistent moisture, hidden behind furniture, provides the perfect environment for toxic black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) to proliferate.

You should absolutely consult a pediatrician to address the immediate health concerns. Simultaneously, this is a situation that demands professional remediation. Disturbing the mold yourself can release a massive amount of harmful spores and mycotoxins into your living space, drastically worsening the air quality and your family's exposure.

Our company, Saniservice, specializes in such cases. We conduct a comprehensive inspection using moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the full extent of the moisture intrusion and mold growth, which is often more widespread than what is visible. Our remediation process is designed to contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, and address the underlying moisture issue to prevent recurrence, all in accordance with Dubai Municipality guidelines for healthy housing.
