Could black mold be causing our persistent cough and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for a month, and I just found a huge patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom where it’s always damp from the AC. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I'm starting to get headaches myself. Should I get them tested for anything specific, or will the symptoms go away if we just get the mold cleaned up?

Yes, the black mold you found is very likely causing the persistent cough and headaches. In Dubai's climate, continuous AC use creates significant condensation, leading to the damp, hidden conditions behind furniture where mold thrives. The constant exposure to mold spores in your indoor air is a common irritant, causing respiratory symptoms like coughing and sinus congestion, which can escalate to headaches.

For your children's health, a visit to a pediatrician is advisable. You should describe the mold exposure; they may assess for allergy-related issues or worsened asthma. The symptoms should improve once the mold source is removed and the air quality is restored, but a medical opinion is important for persistent cases.

Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive amount of spores. Professional remediation is necessary. In a villa, the issue often starts with high indoor humidity or a leak. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—be it a leaking AC drain line, poor insulation, or rising damp—and fix it to prevent recurrence.

Look for a provider that offers a full process: containment of the area, safe removal following guidelines like those from the Dubai Municipality, and most importantly, verification through post-remediation testing to confirm the spore count in your air has returned to a safe level. This final test is the only way to know the problem is truly solved.
